Energy efficient light bulbs keep their way into the mainstream market. One of the most recent examples could be the Pali Momi Medical Center in Hawaii. This facility has replaced about 2300 fluorescents and compact fluorescents with LED technology, reducing their power company bill by over 50%!
While LED light bulbs provide an initial cost much greater than CFLs, their lifetime compensates for it. LEDs will last providing 100,000 hours, in comparison to compact fluorescents which will last from 10,000 to 15,000 hours. The higher initial price is usually repaid within the novice of usage, with each consecutive year being pure savings. A spokesperson to the Pali Momi Medical Center expects their investment in LEDs to be returned by savings in around 15 months, with all the savings continuing for a long time.
Impressive savings have been seen in the Honolulu airport, in which a large retrofit of parking garage lighting is saving $100,000 monthly on electricity. If they conducted similar retrofits in other airport facilities, the savings could be incredible. LED lights not just save a small fortune in the end, but you are better to the environment than compact fluorescents. CFLs contain mercury and emit UV rays, while LEDs contain no toxic chemicals , nor give off UV rays.
